Businesses in Asia
Business expansion in Asia has been a strategic emphasis since we launched our first overseas branch in Hong Kong in 1987. We have listed the shares of subsidiaries on stock exchanges in Hong Kong, Thailand and Malaysia, and have established business operations in 11 countries in Asia including Taiwan, China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, India, Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos.

We launched our first overseas business in Hong Kong by establishing a subsidiary there in July 1990. We then listed its shares on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in September 1995. We have added cardholders by energetically acquiring them through Aeon Stores (Hong Kong) and partner companies and through sales promotion campaigns. We have also collaborated with partner companies to initiate mail-order sales using an Internet catalog, and are now expanding this business. In addition, we are growing our insurance business by cross-selling to cardholders and through corporate sales to AEON Group business partners.
Thailand

After launching operations in Hong Kong, we established an overseas sales base in Thailand in 1992. Its growing businesses led us to list its shares on the Stock Exchange of Thailand in December 2001. We have been adding cardholders by strengthening membership at retail stores, and by issuing a credit card in collaboration with Thai Airways. We have also issued member cards that work within the Rabbit e-money system through collaboration with the BTS Group, which operates in businesses including rail transportation. In addition, we are leveraging our expertise in credit businesses to energetically build our insurance, leasing and servicing businesses.
Malaysia

We established a subsidiary in Malaysia in 1996 as our third base in rapidly growing Asia, and listed its shares on Bursa Malaysia Berhad in December 2007. We have steadily increased our cardholder base by expanding the number of affiliated merchants and by acquiring cardholders when affiliated companies including AEON Malaysia and AEON BiG Malaysia have opened stores. We have also expanded the markets we serve with the Touch’n Go Card, an electronic toll collection (ETC) card used to pay for highway tolls and train and city-bus fares, and by issuing an affinity card for AEON BiG Malaysia that incorporates a point program.
Taiwan

In May 2002, we became the first Japanese-affiliated non-bank company to acquire a credit card issue license in Taiwan. We are now issuing affinity cards and acquiring cardholders through partner companies.
China

In June 2000, we established a screening, debt-collection and call-center agent in Shenzhen as a new base in China. Our subsidiary in Hong Kong then transferred its call-center and screening operations to this agent to improve operating efficiency. We also entered a new market by establishing a company that operates in the installment services business and opened offices in Shenyang in April 2011, Tianjin in September 2012, and Shenzhen in April 2013.
Indonesia

We established a company in May 2006 in Indonesia, which has a high economic growth rate and has the largest population in ASEAN. We are leveraging our credit business expertise in Japan and other Asian countries to launch a hire purchase business targeting consumer electronics and furniture stores. We are also building our network of affiliated merchants by focusing on their development, and we are acquiring cardholders through partner companies.
Philippines

A subsidiary established in the Philippines in February 2008 became our newest base in Asia after we had entered the markets of Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan, China and Indonesia. It supports the other Asian subsidiaries and is building the business foundation for expanding our credit businesses in the region. We also expanded our operations by establishing a subsidiary in the installment services business in March 2013.
Vietnam

We established a subsidiary in Ho Chi Min City after acquiring a retailing license from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Planning and Investment in June 2008. Leveraging our credit business expertise in Japan and other Asian countries, this subsidiary handles installment sales of consumer durables, such as personal computers, home appliances and furniture. We are building the foundation for launching a credit card business in Vietnam by expanding our network of affiliated retailers and building an organized customer base.
India
AEON CREDIT SERVICE INDIA PRIVATE LIMITED📷
We established a subsidiary in Mumbai upon receiving a non-bank license from the Reserve Bank of India in February 2013. We serve the Indian market with installment services for consumer durables such as home appliances and furniture, and we are also expanding our network of affiliated merchants and energetically conducting joint sales planning with them to expand our businesses.
Cambodia
AEON SPECIALIZED BANK (CAMBODIA) PLC.📷
We established a subsidiary in Cambodia in October 2011. It provides installment services for consumer durables such as televisions and for mobile phones, and also provides unsecured small loans. We then entered the credit card business in October 2015 after becoming the first Japanese company to receive a specialized banking license from Cambodia’s central bank, the National Bank of Cambodia. We offer customers convenient and beneficial financial services as well as benefits including special privileges at AEON Group shopping centers.
Myanmar
AEON MICROFINANCE (MYANMAR) CO., LTD.📷
We established a subsidiary in Yangon in July 2013 after acquiring a license from the Myanmar Microfinance Supervisory Enterprise. Myanmar has a population of about 60 million, and its development momentum is expected to accelerate with the progress of democratization and economic reform. We will improve convenience for local customers by further developing the installment services business with emphasis on consumer durables such as home appliances and furniture, and on unsecured loan businesses such as educational loans.
Laos

We established a company in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, in January 2013. It operates in the installment services business for consumer durables such as home appliances, furniture and motorcycles. We are expanding our business through means such as issuing member cards and planning collaborative sales promotions with affiliated merchants.
